Daily Racing Form (DRF) was a print media company that operated based on conventional editorial processes catered to the horseracing industry until it made the digital transition to becoming a modern-day, data-driven media and Ecommerce enterprise. What sets DRF apart is its digital products that help horseplayers raise their game, among them, is DRF Formulator (Formulator).

The Challenge

The most efficient way of playing the races

Handicapping becomes more efficient when horseplayers are given the most detailed account on all horses, trainers, jockeys, and results. Formulator seeks to dominate in this area. Many important advanced handicapping tools were buried deep within the legacy Flash version of Formulator. This old version of Formulator was depended on for years, became difficult to use due to lack of browser support, and needed a major technical update.

Formulator’s main feature is to showcase the “Past Performance” (PP) of a horse, marry that with DRF’s industry-leading analysis while giving a seamless betting experience. This information is extensive and without a customized platform that can hold that much data in an organized way, it can create confusion and frustration among users. Formulator needed to be a platform that would cater to this specific need, support DRF’s growing mobile clientele, and provide a smooth user experience while preserving DRF’s fresh new image.
This is where Webonise came in.

The Solution

A highly customizable gameplay environment for horseplayers

All of DRF’s digital products are developed with a customer-centric*, user research-driven* product ideology, including Formulator. To deliver Formulator, Webonise architected a ReactJS-based frontend with Java-based microservices using Spring and Hibernate framework, arriving at a product that is fully optimized for desktop and tablets. Customizability is Formulator’s most prominent feature. Everything within the application is made to adapt to the user’s preferences. It gives every horseplayer the feeling of exclusivity; the power to engineer their own view of the data to suit their style!
*An approach in product design and development wherein features and user experience testing are done first; any new feature development is prioritized by data from user research.

The Result

The most in-depth horse racing analysis and wagering tool to date

The new Formulator now provides an unprecedented gameplay environment to its users by letting handicappers view their PPs exactly how they want and place bets right from the same view.

Data is displayed based on their handicapping preferences. Users can take notes in Formulator that are synced to other products like DRF Bets and the DRF iOS app. Users have easy access to advanced data tools for the thorough handicapper (Trainer Pattern Tool, Sire & Pedigree Stats, Beyer Speed FIgures, and more). Whichever way users are used to playing the races, DRF Formulator has all the right tools to help them raise their game.
